Healthcare is the top topic that Democratic voters want discussed at the party’s first presidential debates next week, according to a USA Today/Suffolk University poll released on Wednesday.

Healthcare was named by 20 percent of respondents as the single issue they want to hear discussed during the June 26-27 debates in Miami, followed by immigration and border security at 12 percent, the economy/budget at 9 percent and climate change/environment at 7 percent.

Other results from the survey show:

  • Removing President Donald Trump from office was the top topic for only 4 percent of respondents, the same percentage that want to hear about better cooperation in government, the plans of candidates to get the country on track, general social issues and equality issues.
  • Fewer than one percent cited election interference as the main topic they wanted discussed.
  • Eighty-six percent of respondents said the debates will be important in determining which candidate they support, while 82 percent said they would be watching them.
  • Fifty-four percent characterized the debates as “very important.”
  • Thirty percent of respondents said they were supporting or leaning toward former vice president Joe Biden, while Sen. Bernie Sanders was in second place with 15 percent and Sen. Elizabeth Warren in third at 10 percent
  • However, excitement for Biden's candidacy has dropped eight points to 51 percent since March, while excitement for Warren is up five points to 37 percent and four points higher for Sen. Kamal Harris to 40 percent.

The poll was conducted between June 11-15 and surveyed 385 registered Democratic voters. It has a five-point margin of error.
