Tom Suozzi, the Democrat running for the New York district vacated by former Republican Rep. George Santos, warned in an interview Monday that "Democrats have been losing everything on Long Island" for years.
Suozzi, a former congressman from Long Island, faces Republican candidate Mazi Melesa Pilip in the race for New York's 3rd Congressional District in a special election on Feb. 13. He told CNN before the election that "it's a very tough seat" in an area where Democrats have struggled recently.
"Democrats have been losing everything on Long Island and northeast Queens for the past three years," Suozzi. "The Democratic brand is in trouble here, and we have to do a lot to overcome that."
Suozzi also noted that a visit from President Joe Biden would not help his campaign.
"I don't think that would be helpful, just as I don't think [former president] Donald Trump would be helpful to my opponent," Suozzi said. "This race is really very local. It's Suozzi versus Mazi."
Pilip said she would "appreciate" a visit from Trump.
"He's a great president," Pilip told CNN. "Of course, he's welcome to help me … if he can come to help me, I will appreciate that."
