American Bridge, one of the largest Democrat super PACs, is launching a $50 million campaign aimed at weakening President Donald Trump’s support among white working-class voters in the upper Midwest and elsewhere, NBC News is reporting.
"We understand that we may not win these voters back entirely, but if we don't make inroads into these areas, we will win the popular vote, lose the Electoral College, and the Senate could be lost for a decade," the group wrote in a memo to prospective donorsthat NBC News obtained.
American Bridge is embarking on a major fundraising effort to increase its budget from less than $30 million per two-year election cycle to $80 million for the upcoming 2020 campaign.
Officials tell NBC News the added money will pay for TV, digital and radio advertising and other efforts to convince rural and exurban voters in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania that Trump has damaged their economic interests.
“We intend to rely on local voices to serve as our messengers in many of these key counties," according to the donor memo. "We know that national voices are not always the most effective with the set of voters we intend to target and persuade, and we will operate accordingly.
American Bridge also is actively working against a presidential candidacy by former Starbucks chief executive Howard Schultz.
“If Howard Schultz runs for president, the only thing he’ll do is make sure Donald Trump secures a second term,” Andrew Bates, a spokesman for the group, said last month.
