Debbie Lesko to Newsmax TV: Trump Has Right to Tweet

rep. debbie lesko speaks during a house judiciary committee meeting

Rep. Debbie Lesko, R-Ariz., on Friday told Newsmax TV that President Donald Trump has a “right” to tweet about ongoing cases involving the Department of Justice, but admitted that he does give Democrats “fodder” to attack.

Lesko, who sits on the House Judiciary Committee, was asked during an interview on “The National Report” about Trump’s tweeting about Roger Stone and the DOJ’s decision to reduce the sentencing recommendation. The congresswoman said that Trump “likes tweeting, and that’s his way to get around some of the mainstream media to get his message out. Now I do agree with Attorney General [William] Barr that sometimes it would be more helpful if he didn't tweet in ongoing cases with the DOJ.”

She continued, “I don't know if President Trump will listen to Attorney General Barr on that, because he’s kind of his own man and that's why he got elected. But the one thing we do know is that President Trump is the most transparent president there is because he just tweets what's on his mind. And there's nothing wrong with him saying, ‘I think the sentence was too long,’ especially since you look at sentences for other types of crimes, violent crimes, and so I think he has a right to tweet it. Now, did it kind of mess things up so that it gave fodder for the Democrats?, Yes.”
