U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman told a Jewish group Sunday a civil war in Israel could erupt if residents of Jewish settlements in the West Bank are forced to evacuate.

According to Axios, Friedman said during a conference of presidents of the Jewish organizations in North America that forced evacuations could have dire consequences.

The roughly 400,000 Jewish settlers in the West Bank, Friedman noted, "are not going anywhere … and significant evacuation could result in a civil war. This is my opinion."

The settlements are one of the main components of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. There has been talk for years about Jewish settlers having to abandon their homes in the West Bank or continue to live in them as citizens of Palestine in order to broker peace. Israel, however, has pushed forward with the construction of more settlements in the disputed area.

Friedman also noted that the United States will relocate its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem before the end of 2019, a move originally made public in December.

It was later clarified that the U.S. government will not list "Jerusalem, Israel" as an actual location on any official documents.
