Former Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., is considering making another bid for Congress, The Hill is reporting.

Issa, who did not seek re-election in 2018, is eyeing a bid for California’s 50th Congressional District if GOP Rep. Duncan Hunter does not seek re-election or resigns. The Hill noted Issa is currently tracking the federal corruption case involving Hunter while he ponders entering the race.

Hunter’s San Diego area district is adjacent to the one Issa had represented.

A possible bid for the House would come as Issa’s nomination to head the U.S. Trade and Development Agency has been stalled in committee for months, The Hill reported.

The website, attributing the information to a source close to the former congressman, said no final decision has been made about a possible House bid.

Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., was asked about a hypothetical scenario of Issa running for the seat if Hunter steps aside.

“Darrell has got a servant’s heart,” he said. “If he is willing to serve and continue to serve, and can earn the trust of California electorate, I’d be applauding from the stands.”

But an unnamed Republican lawmaker told The Hill: “Issa had his time here.  And most people know that when you retire, you are done. And so, yeah, we know California is a challenging political environment, but I don’t think there’s been a lot of calls made to have him come back.”

Issa had announced in January 2018, he would not seek re-election.
