Rep. Dana Rohrabacher has introduced legislation that would speed up the refugee process for religious minorities who are being persecuted by the Islamic State and other groups in the Middle East.

"The alarm bell is ringing," the California Republican told The Hill on Wednesday. "Ancient longstanding communities of Christians in the Middle East are being murdered individually and are mass-targeted for extinction."

Under the bill introduced last week, Middle Eastern Christians and Yazidis would be given priority over other applicants for entry into the United States.

The legislation has 14 GOP co-sponsors, the Hill reports.

Rohrabacher noted that Muslims being attacked by ISIS in Syria, for instance, have been able to find refuge in Europe.

"Hundreds of thousands of Muslims are finding safety and economic handouts in Europe," he told the Hill. "But what about the true targets of genocide?

"Where is their safe haven?"
