Former Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., told Newsmax TV on Thursday when he offered to help try to secure a pardon for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, he was not doing so at the direction of President Donald Trump.
Rohrabacher told "National Report" that when meeting with Assange, "at no time did I ever portray myself as representing the president, that's number one. Number two, I certainly couldn't promise Julian Assange anything more than [that] I would try to bring it up and try to alert the president to this, if indeed he could give us actual proof as to who actually got those emails, and made them public, and gave them to Julian Assange."
He added he met with the WikiLeaks founder because "the Democrats and . . . their lapdogs in the news media had been presenting this idea that the president of the United States, Donald Trump, won because he had colluded with the Russians, which has been totally disproven since them, and that it was Julian Assange who had actually worked with him to get the Russians to hack into the system of the Democratic National Committee."
The former congressman said, "Well, that lie, that big lie, was being told over and over again, and frankly the news media at the same time was ignoring who probably did hack the system, or actually did not hack but downloaded this information, was murdered by someone after this whole thing happened."
This is an apparent reference to the late Democratic staffer Seth Rich, who was murdered in what police have described as a failed robbery attempt. Rohrabacher and other conservatives have pushed the theory, which has not been proven, that Rich leaked the emails to WikiLeaks. This rumor has been spread by the Russian intelligence service SVR and the "Russian troll factory," the Internet Research Agency.
