FAIR President to Illegals: Think About 'Going Out And Buying Some Luggage'

CNN's "New Day"

President Donald Trump's administration plans a return of "rigorous" enforcement of immigration rules, according to Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform.

"What people don't understand is that after 1994 and 1995, Congress was given the executive, broad, and important powers in controlling immigration, but for eight years, the Obama administration refused to enforce those laws," Stein told CNN's "New Day" on Wednesday.

Now, Stein added, the current administration is "going back to a process, a normalization, if you will, of rigorous, regular immigration enforcement that's consistent with the social contract and our role as a sovereign nation."

"You look at all these orders. If you're here illegally, you need to be thinking about going out and buying some luggage," Stein said.

"Nobody ever decided in this country that immigration was unlimited, that you could break the immigration law and then demand to stay, that you could jump in front of the line in front of millions of people who respect our laws all over the world, and just come in and say, 'OK, I'm here, I don't have to go.' If you enforce these laws, you can reclaim our schools, our hospitals, and our communities for the American people."

Host Alisyn Camerota asked Stein about a provision of the order which said the U.S. will send "unauthorized border crossers" back while they wait on deportation hearings.

"Apparently, Donald Trump has lots of, you know, arrows in his quiver. He has lots of carrots, including various leverage, on that," Stein said, adding his organization supports "minimum" due process standards for the immigrants.

Also present during Stein's interview was American Civil Liberties Union staff attorney Andre Segura, who disagrees with the administration's policies.

"This is bringing to life President Trump's worst, most divisive campaign rhetoric," Segura said.

"They are our neighbors. They are part of our community. They're part of the fabric of this country and we need a humanitarian response to how we handle that. These are people who are law-abiding residents of this country and really would make our country great."
