President Donald Trump is considering replacing Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats with former CIA analyst Fred Fleitz, a new report claims.
The Washington Times reported Thursday that Trump soured on Coats in February after his comments about North Korea in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee. In May, as the Times noted, Trump signed an executive order that allows the Department of Justice to investigate the intelligence community for alleged spying of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.
After it was recently reported that Fleitz could succeed Coats and lead the nation's intelligence efforts, people within that bubble were shocked, the Times reported.
During Coats' aforementioned Senate testimony, he told Democrats on the committee that the intelligence community does not believe North Korea is willing to abandon its nuclear weapons program. Trump felt that statement undercut his administration's ongoing negotiations with the reclusive country's regime to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.
Fleitz worked at the CIA for 25 years and later served as chief of staff and executive secretary of the National Security Council from May-October 2018. He is currently the president and CEO of the Center for Security Policy.
