Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants to take away guns owned by all New York domestic violence offenders, including for misdemeanors, and deny them to everyone when a protective order is issued against them.

The governor proposed on Wednesday that the state adopt legislation prohibiting gun ownership to anyone having any kind of a conviction for domestic violence, Time reported.

Currently this only applies to people convicted of felonies.

“Any person convicted of domestic violence should not be able to own a gun. Period,” the governor posted on Twitter, along with a link to an online petition.

The proposed bill, which forms part of Cuomo’s Jan. 3 State of the State address, also seeks to make it mandatory for all firearms to be surrendered when a protection order is issued, including rifles and shotguns which are excluded under current law, the New York Daily News reported.

Citing nine of the ten deadliest mass shooting incidents in the U.S, Cuomo said the shooters were found to have prior records of violence and intimidation towards women.

He further noted that firearms were used in 25 domestic homicides in New York in the last year alone.

"This year will be remembered as the year of reckoning, when both the tragedy of mass shootings and cultural and institutional harassment of women became impossible to ignore," Cuomo said.

"Building on the Women's Equality Agenda, we are continuing our mission for progressive values and women's rights with this legislation to target the unquestionable relationship between domestic violence and gun violence."

April Zeoli, a lead researcher on the Michigan State study on firearm restrictions, believes that the proposed bill could influence various other states.

“New York and California tend to move on these types of laws more quickly,” she said, per Time.

“They can provide us with evidence of what happens when a state passes this kind of law. We can evaluate these states to see what the evidence is. And use that to inform what other states would do in the future.”
