White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Friday said reports that top aides for New York Democrat Gov. Andrew Cuomo allegedly rewrote a June nursing home report from state officials to hide the higher COVID-19 death toll among the state's nursing home residents was ''troubling.''
''We've certainly seen those reports. Obviously, they're troubling and we certainly would support any outside investigation, but those wouldn't be determined by us,'' Psaki told reporters at a press briefing.
The New York Times, citing documents and interviews with six people with direct knowledge of the discussions who requested anonymity, reported that some of Cuomo's senior aides were involved in rewriting the report to lower the death toll in nursing homes — the final report said 6,432 nursing home residents died of the virus, compared with nearly 10,000 in the initial unpublished report.
Cuomo is facing calls for his resignation over the nursing home scandal and two allegations of sexual harassment and an accusation that he made unwanted advances on another woman. New York Attorney General Letitia James is leading investigations into both issues.
Psaki earlier in the week said President Joe Biden supports an ''independent review'' of the sexual harassment accusations leveled against Cuomo.
''Charlotte (Bennett) should be treated with respect and dignity. So should Lindsey (Boylan),'' Psaki said. ''And there should be an independent review looking into these allegations. And that's certainly something [Biden] supports and we believe should move forward as quickly as possible.''
