A Tennessee parents group filed a lawsuit challenging curriculum it says teaches age inappropriate critical race theory to elementary students, a violation of state law, reports Fox 17.

The group of Williamson County parents filed the suit in Franklin regarding the district's "Wit & Wisdom" materials.

Tennessee in May banned K-12 public schools from teaching ideas linked to CRT, although the bill did not cite the theory by name.

"The claims presented in this lawsuit raise serious constitutional concerns regarding the parental liberty rights of parents to direct and control the education and upbringing of their children," said Larry Crain, attorney for Parents' Choice Tennessee. "The school system has turned a deaf ear to these concerns, and this is what has prompted this action."

Material taught to students provides "age-inappropriate" lessons and works to "promote a skewed and racist view of history," said Patricia Lucente, one of the parents who started the group.

"You've got our smallest littlest children seeing the most violent parts of what was slavery," she said. "Obviously, that's a part of our nation's history, and they do learn that and they will learn that at some point.

"The curriculum was adopted through a process in violation of state law, and over the objections of several parents and educators who raised serious concerns about the graphic, racist, and age-inappropriate nature of much of its content."
