GOP Senators Demand ICE Answers on Repeat-Offender Criminal Illegals

Three GOP senators are demanding Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials explain how 156 undocumented immigrant criminals "incredibly" managed to become repeat offenders — yet were never deported.

Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, who chairs the Senate's Judiciary Committee, reports ICE has disclosed that of 33,007 illegal immigrants with criminal records released from government custody in 2013, 1,000 were convicted of additional crimes — and 156 were then re-arrested and re-released a second time instead of getting deported.

"Incredibly, as though releasing these criminal aliens one time is not bad enough, ICE once again released from its custody at least 156 of these repeat offenders back into our neighborhoods, instead of deporting them," Grassley writes in a letter to ICE Assistant Secretary Sarah Saldana.

"This practice is completely contrary to the president’s promise to deport “[f]elons, not families . . . . [c]riminals, not children . . . . [g]ang members, not a mom who’s working hard to provide for her kids.”

The letter — which asks Saldana to identify the 156 criminals, their crimes and justification for their release — was also signed by Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake and Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions.

The joint letter comes after Grassley revealed earlier this week that between 2010 and 2014, 121 undocumented immigrants with criminal records who were released from ICE custody have since been charged with murder.

Grassley says he began investigating reports last year of criminals facing deportation getting released from government custody and committing other crimes, noting he sent Saldana a letter in January.

Her June 12 response advised Grassley that "as of March 29, 2015, ICE has removed 182 of these aliens," but admitted "Subsequent to their FY 2013 release, ICE rebooked-in and rebooked-out 156 of these aliens as of March 29, 2015."
