Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was subpoenaed Tuesday by House Republicans regarding his decision to allow patients with COVID-19 into nursing homes during the peak of the pandemic.
Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, the Chairman of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic said Cuomo's nursing home policies "had deadly consequences for New York's most vulnerable population."
"Former Gov. Cuomo owes answers to the 15,000 families who lost loved ones in New York nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic," Wenstrup said in a press release. "His testimony is crucial to uncover the circumstances that led to his misguided policies and for ensuring that fatal mistakes never happen again.
"Not only did the former Governor put the elderly in harm's way, but he also attempted to cover-up his failures by hiding the true nursing home death rate. It appears that politics, not medicine, was responsible for these decisions. And that while Mr. Cuomo is adept at seeking legal advice, he is not necessarily adept at seeking medical advice."
"This is an obvious press charade," Cuomo spokesperson Rich Azzopardi wrote in a posted X response to the subpoena. "Congress is officially a circus, and they are nothing but clowns."
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cuomo issued an executive order requiring nursing homes to take back patients who had been hospitalized for COVID-19 and were recovering. Ultimately, more than 15,800 New York nursing home residents died.
Cuomo resigned in 2021 amid allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior.
