Sen. Corker: Obama Slow to the Table on Syria

By    |   Wednesday, 28 August 2013 09:59 PM EDT

President Barack Obama has been "very slow to come to the table" on Syria, says Sen. Bob Corker, a Republican from Tennessee, but he must take action after the country crossed Obama's self-professed "red line" and used poison gas on civilians.

Corker said Obama's policy on Syria appears to be similar to a policy passed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where Corker is a ranking member. The committee's policy included arming and training Syrian rebels in their fight against Bashar Assad's regime.

But Corker added the covert nature of the Obama administration's operation makes it hard to know the exact details.

"I was just there two weeks ago, and I know those arms still had not yet begun to flow," Corker told CNN on Wednesday. "So I will say I think the administration has been frustratingly slow in helping build the capacity — not with our men and women on the ground, but through equipping and training the opposition."

Corker said he doesn't want to see any U.S. action become a larger conflict. Many observers fear that could happen if the United States fires cruise missiles at Syrian government targets.

Corker is already back in Washington, even though Congress is still on its August break. He said he is set to attend meetings to get more information on the administration's Syria strategy.
