Conservatives Decry Cost of Immigration Reform

By    |   Tuesday, 09 Apr 2013 02:13 PM

Some Conservative groups who helped defeat a 2007 immigration overhaul bill are hoping to repeat that success by claiming the costs associated with the current reform effort are simply not affordable.

The groups, including the Heritage Foundation headed by former South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint, claim the cost of legalizing 1 million undocumented workers now living in the United States would bust Obamacare and other entitlement programs, Politico reported Tuesday.

"These costs are far larger than anyone imagines and would be increased substantially under amnesty," said DeMint. "In a time of trillion-dollar deficits and $17 trillion in debt, the cost of every federal program should be of tremendous concern, especially if it's a program that will add new costs to a budget that's already severely in the red."

The exact costs associated with eventually providing a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants is still unclear.

But according to Politico, economists across the political spectrum believe the benefits of new labor would help boost the economy. A few conservative-leaning groups like the Cato Institute and Americans for Tax Reform have also dismissed claims that the immigration reform will add to the nation's budget problems.

The bipartisan group of senators currently negotiating the new immigration legislation have said they are working to ensure that it will be deficit-neutral over the next ten years. One proposal under consideration, for example, would bar new citizens from claiming government benefits for at least a decade.
