Members of Congress to Get Security Suggestions

Sunday, 09 January 2011 03:58 PM EST

WASHINGTON (AP) — A House Democratic leader says he thinks lawmakers will be taking precautions when meeting with the public in the wake of a congresswoman's shooting in Arizona.

Connecticut Rep. John Larson, who heads the House Democratic Caucus, says lawmakers will continue to have open sessions with their constituents.

Leaders from both parties held a conference call Sunday with the House sergeant at arms to discuss security in the aftermath of the attack that wounded Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and killed six people Saturday in Tucson.

He says more than 800 people participated in the call — members of Congress, their spouses, chiefs of staff and others.

Larson says lawmakers will receive specific security suggestions later in the week from the Capitol Police and the sergeant at arms's office.
