Republicans in Congress fear that President Donald Trump is reducing their authority in an attempt to push his political agenda, CNN reports.

Trump has feuded with congressional Democrats over his tax returns, special counsel Robert Mueller’s report, and his administration’s security clearance procedures. His conflict with Republicans comes from his renewed push to replace the Affordable Care Act, his picks for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, and his withdrawing Ron Vitiello’s nomination to head U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"This is a non-traditional presidency," Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, one of the leading Republicans in Congress, told CNN. "And the president now believes he doesn't need a lot of advisers because he wants to do it himself."

GOP senators also have expressed concern, which has gone ignored by the White House, about the high number of acting secretaries in Trump’s Cabinet, bypassing the Senate confirmation process.

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., the head of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said this is “not a good situation,” and that “checks and balances” are needed for the system to work.

"An acting person is there, after all, for a limited period of time, and you do want to have as much continuity in leadership posts as possible," said Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah.

"I do think the acting secretary issue is problematic because it doesn't give us as members the oversight that we need to have," said Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, of West Virginia.
