China made a big mistake when it revealed its intentions to dominate the tech world, because the U.S. and other nations already were nervous about how Beijing might use technology for spying, Condoleezza Rice said Wednesday on CNBC’s “Sqawk Box.”
Rice, who was secretary of state and national security adviser under former President George W. Bush, said that “I think any Chinese company is going to do what the Chinese government tells them to do,” referring specifically to smartphone and networking giant Huawei, adding “it’s very clear that China is going to use these [surveillance] tools in ways that, I think, would make us all uncomfortable.”
Huawei was effectively blacklisted by the Commerce Department shortly after President Donald Trump last month declared a national emergency over threats against American technology, although that move was put on a three-month hold.
Rice said she hopes that, heading into trade negotiations at next week’s G-20 summit in Japan, the U.S. and China can negotiate an agreement on intellectual property protections and market access to end the punitive tariffs they have placed on each other.
