Rep. Conaway Calls for Obama to Lift Crude Oil Export Ban

House Agriculture Committee Chairman Mike Conaway Saturday called on President Barack Obama to lift the nation's outdated ban on crude oil exports, saying the "policies of the 1970s should not and must not limit the possibilities of the 21st century."

The nation's energy boom is creating jobs and revitalizing industry, the Texas Republican said in Saturday's GOP address, "in spite of the Obama administration’s efforts to block production anywhere and everywhere it can," but the federal government's ban on crude oil exports is costing American jobs.

"It’s outdated, also," said Conaway. "Many of us remember what happened back in the 1970s, when gas prices quadrupled almost overnight. The government responded by putting a cap on gas prices. But instead of protecting consumers, it just caused long lines at the gas station and rationing."

After that, he said, the government put a ban on oil exports to prevent price-controlled oil from going overseas, but the ban did not protect the United States from world oil prices or allow the nation to control its own supply.

But times have changed, Conaway continued, and "far from being addicted to foreign oil, we are in the midst of a crude oil renaissance right here at home," and "all the ban is doing now is holding back economic development in every state of our union."

If the ban was lifted, there would be "close to a million jobs" created in a few years, and consumer gasoline prices would drop, said Conaway, pointing to a Government Accountability Office report.

Also, Obama's deal with Iran "opens the floodgates" for Iranian crude oil to come back in the U.S. market, and Russian President Vladimir Putin is using Russia's energy supply to control Europe.

The House has just passed H.R. 702, in hopes of lifting the ban, but Obama has threatened to veto it, said Conaway, urging the president to listen to Americans instead and lift the ban.
