Atlanta Public Schools is weighing dropping the Columbus Day holiday and renaming it Indigenous Peoples' Day, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The day will remain a school day off, but it will change the acknowledgment of the historical explorer to celebrating the people who were in America when Christopher Columbus arrived.

APS Chairman Jason Esteves said the move is about historic figures "we learn [about] and sometimes honor a little too much," he told the paper.

"We'd prefer to learn about them versus honor them, and Christopher Columbus is one of them," Esteves told the AJC.

The move received unanimous support to change the name of the holiday, which next comes on the calendar Oct. 12, 2020, and a vote will be taken at the next APS board meeting, according to the report.
