Sensitive Department of Homeland Security anti-terrorism documents detailing a simulated anthrax attack on the Super Bowl were found in the seat-back pocket on an airplane by a CNN employee, the network reported.

CNN held off on reporting about the incident and the documents until after the game, held Sunday in Minneapolis.

Marked "for official use only" and "important for national security," the documents were after-action reports of a simulated biological attack and governmental agencies' response, CNN reports.

Holder of the docs, in this case apparently DHS microbiologist Michael Walter, — whose boarding pass and itinerary accompanied the docs on the commercial flight — were instructed to shred the docs, CNN reported.

CNN could not verify that it was Walter who left the docs on the plane, however.

Former DHS official turned CNN contributor Juliette Kayyem says leaving the docs on a plan was a "really stupid thing."

"Who knows who else could have picked this up," Kayyem told CNN. "The biggest consequence of this mistake may have less to do with terrorists knowing our vulnerabilities and more to do with confidence in the Department of Homeland Security. In the end, confidence in the federal government at a time of crisis is what the American public deserves."

The two anthrax-attack exercises, run in July and November by BioWatch, DHS' biological arm where Walter is a program manager, exposed deficiencies in local, state and federal agencies' responses to a potential attack in Minneapolis, which is the intent in order to improve readiness in the event of a real attack, CNN reports.
