CNN Poll: Trump Leads Biden, Who 67 Percent of Dems Don't Want

By    |   Thursday, 07 September 2023 09:50 AM EDT

Former President Donald Trump not only leads President Joe Biden in the latest CNN poll, but even two-thirds of Democrats want someone other than Biden to be their party's nominee next year.

Trump leads Biden 47% to 46% among registered voters, and Democrat-leaning voters are increasingly concerned there are "continued headwinds" for the Democrat incumbent's reelection hopes. All but one of the Republican presidential primary candidates poll-tested lead the incumbent president.

Democrats (67%) are overwhelmingly on the side of wanting anyone but Biden to be the Democrat presidential nominee in 2024.

Health, age, and potential exposure to his son's foreign business dealings are the top reasons.

Some 73% of U.S. adults are very concerned about Biden's mental and physical health, including 56% of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independent voters.

Additionally, 61% of U.S. adults say then-Vice President Biden had some involvement in Hunter Biden's foreign business dealings, including 90% of Republican and GOP-leaning voters and 64% of independents. Even a plurality (42%) say Biden acted "illegally."

While Trump leads Biden by 1 point, some other GOP presidential primary candidates poll even better against the incumbent. Nikki Haley polls the strongest at plus-6 points (49%-43%), making her the only one who falls outside the poll's margin of error.

Even former Vice President Mike Pence (plus-2, 46%-44%), Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C. (plus-2, 46%-44%), and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (plus-2, 44%-42%) outscore Biden. DeSantis is tied at 47%-47%.

Only entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy trails Biden, and that's by a single point, 45%-46%.

Other notable findings from the poll:

  • Biden has a 39% overall approval rating.
  • 74% of Democrats approve of the job Biden is doing.
  • 58% of voters say Biden's policies are worsening the economy.

Finally, Republicans appear to hold momentum as the GOP primary debate season kicks off. Some 71% of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents are extremely motivated to vote in 2024, a figure that has risen 6 points since June.

Democrats appear to be losing momentum, with 61% of Democrats and Democrat-leaning voters extremely motivated to vote in 2024, trailing the GOP by 10 points on that metric, which has dropped 1 point since June and swung 7 points versus that of their political opposition.

SSRS polled 1,503 adults for CNN on Aug. 25-31, including 1,259 registered voters, 391 registered Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents, and 898 registered Republicans and GOP-leaning independents. The margins of error are plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for the full sample, plus or minus 3.6 percentage points for registered voters, and plus or minus 6.09 percentage points for Democrat and Democrat-leaning independents.
