By    |   Monday, 10 December 2012 01:05 PM

Outgoing Secretary of State Hillary has been nominated for this year’s Tipperary International Peace Award.

"Throughout her tenure,’’ Martin Quinn of the Tipperary Peace Convention told TheJournal.ie, “she has looked towards ‘smart power’ as the strategy for asserting U.S. leadership and values, combining military strength with U.S. capacities in global economics, development aid, and technology.’’

Previous winners of the prestigious Irish prize include former South African President Nelson Mandela, former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, and former President Bill Clinton.

Clinton — considered a shoo-in as the 2016 Democratic nominee for president — shares the spotlight with four other nominees.

They include:
— Wounded Pakistani school girl Malala Yousafza, shot in the head by a Taliban gunman for trying to promote girl’s education and now recovering in a British hospital.
— Indian National Congress President Sonia Ghandi, widow of assassinated Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who only entered politics after continuous prodding.
— John Githongo, a former Kenyan journalist who fearlessly uncovered and fought government fraud and bribery in his home country.
— Pax Christi International, an international Catholic organization founded in 1945 to promote peace and world order.

The winner will be announced on New Year’s Day in Tipperary, Ireland.
