The chairman of the UN's climate science panel Rajendra Pachauri confirmed Tuesday his resignation after allegations of sexual harassment were levelled against him, saying the body needs "strong leadership".

"The IPCC needs strong leadership and dedication of time and full attention by the chair in the immediate future, which under the current circumstances I may be unable to provide," he said in his resignation letter to UN chief Ban Ki-moon.
