Climate Researcher Trashed for Doubting Link to Greenhouse Gas

By    |   Friday, 16 May 2014 03:33 PM EDT

A climate researcher resigned from a top global warming think tank after his findings questioning the correlation between greenhouse gas emissions and the rate of warming were trashed, the Times of London reports.

Lennart Bengtsson, a research fellow at The University of Reading, says the backlash is such from scientists-turned-activists that he even fears for his safety.

"It is a situation that reminds me about the time of McCarthy. I would never have expected anything similar in such an original peaceful community as meteorology. Apparently it has been transformed in recent years," he wrote in his resignation letter, according to the Daily Mail.

Bengtsson is not a climate-change denier.

He suggested, The Times writes, that "the climate might be much less sensitive to greenhouse gases than had been claimed by the IPCC, the United Nations in its report last September, and recommended that more work be carried out to reduce the underlying uncertainty."

His colleagues at the London-based Global Warming Policy Foundation would not publish his paper, especially as political leaders the world over are seizing on the dire predictions to push so-called green energy alternatives, critics say.

One peer reviewer wrote Bengtsson's findings were "less than helpful."

"Actually, it is harmful as it opens the door for oversimplified claims of 'errors' and worse from the climate skeptics media side," he concluded, according to The Times.

The Swedish Bengtsson's research called into question the IPCC assertion — one seized on by President Barack Obama as he tries to sell his carbon reduction policies — that average temperatures would soar 8 degrees Fahrenheit if greenhouse gases doubled.

Bengtsson is shocked by the blowback and says: "I have been put under such an enormous group pressure in recent days from all over the world that it has become virtually unbearable to me.

"If this is going to continue, I will be unable to conduct my normal work and will even start to worry about my health and safety. … Colleagues are withdrawing their support, other colleagues are withdrawing from joint authorship ... I see no limit and end to what will happen."

The Daily Mail reports that a spokesman for the Environmental Research Letters Journal insists the 79-year-old Bengtsson's work was rejected solely because "the paper contained errors and did not provide a significant advancement in the field, and therefore failed to meet the journal's required acceptance criteria."

But critics said this newest report is yet another example of manipulation.

"I could remind you of the University of East Anglia's infamous 'Climategate' scandal, in which some of the chief missionaries of global warmism were caught contorting their data like they were auditioning for Cirque Du Soleil's new show 'CO2,'" writes Personal Liberty Digest writer Ben Crystal.

"I could, but I don’t need to. The wintry weather we actually witnessed has opened a credibility gap wide enough to swallow up even Sen. Harry Reid's bizarre 'Koch brothers' mantra."
