Advocates for clemency are urging President Barack Obama to approve pending applications for clemency before president-elect Donald Trump enters the White House.

"I do think that this administration has to pull out all the stops to ensure that every single prisoner who is deemed to meet the criteria is considered and granted clemency," Mary Price, general counsel at Families Against Mandatory Minimums, told The Intercept.

Tens of thousands of non-violent convicts have applied through Obama's clemency initiative, but Trump described clemency recipients as "bad dudes," according to NBC News, and warned an audience this summer that "these are people out walking the streets. Sleep tight, folks."

"I think the lift got a little heavier on the federal side," Kevin Ring, vice president of Families Against Mandatory Minimums, told Vice News. "What Trump has said is not encouraging."

"We've been working furiously for months now as we saw the end of the administration nearing — there's a countdown clock on our website," Cynthia Roseberry, project director of Clemency Project 2014, told the Intercept.

"At the end of the day," Roseberry says, "we did reunite some families. And for some families it meant having somebody home who they thought was going to die in prison."

"At these moments I often ask myself, 'Will he become that lucky person to come home, or will I have to visit him in prison until the day he dies?'" wrote Anrica Caldwell in a piece for The Influence about her partner David Morris Barren, currently serving a life sentence with an additional 20 years for nonviolent offenses.
