President Donald Trump’s accusations that British intelligence agencies spied on his election campaign are baseless, “utterly ridiculous” and “nonsense,” a Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) spokesman told Newsweek.
"As we have previously stated, the allegations that GCHQ was asked to conduct 'wiretapping' against the then-president-elect are nonsense,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “They are utterly ridiculous and should be ignored.”
GCHQ is Britain’s main intelligence agency.
Trump promoted the claim on Wednesday, a day after accepting an invitation from Queen Elizabeth II for a state visit to Britain.
“Former CIA analyst Larry Johnson accuses United Kingdom Intelligence of helping Obama Administration Spy on the 2016 Trump Presidential Campaign,” Trump wrote on Twitter of an interview with former CIA analyst Johnson on the One America News Network. “@OANN WOW! It is now just a question of time before the truth comes out, and when it does, it will be a beauty!”
But the report is two years old – Fox News aired the claim in March 2017 and then-press secretary Sean Spicer repeated it during a press briefing.
