A former CIA officer is facing charges he sold top secret and secret documents to China, reports say.
Kevin Mallory, 60, of Leesburg, Va., allegedly sold the documents to Chinese intelligence officials for $25,000 – using a special device to communicate and transmit documents to Chinese operatives, an NBC affiliate in Washington reported.
"Your object is to gain information, and my object is to be paid for," he wrote in one message.
According to Politico, Mallory traveled to China in March and April, when he accepted a secure communication device from a Chinese national.
Mallory later told the FBI he was "trained to use it specifically for private communications" with the Chinese citizen, Politico reported. Mallory allegedly acknowledged to the FBI in an interview last month he had provided "white papers" to the Chinese contact, but denied it was classified information.
Court papers say Mallory worked as a diplomatic security agent for the State Department from 1987 to 1990 and then for "various government agencies," but The Washington Post reported Mallory worked for the CIA, and Politico confirmed the link.
A detention hearing is scheduled for Friday.
