Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. said the Senate must vote on the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund immediately.

Schumer made his appeal in a Wednesday tweet.

He wrote: “The Senate must vote on the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund immediately. @SenateMajLdr McConnell must put the bill on the floor as soon as it passes the House. This is not politics. These are our American heroes, who are suffering and need our help now.”

In remarks on the Senate floor, Schumer said: “Even in a divided Congress, even in a divided country, this is an issue of absolute moral clarity.”

His remarks came after emotional comments by comedian Jon Stewart, who testified Tuesday before a House subcommittee regarding the fund and ripped those lawmakers who did not attend.

"You should be ashamed of yourselves for those that aren't here, but you won't be, because accountability doesn't appear to be something that occurs in this chamber.”
