Former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel is warning against a "bloody nose" strategy against North Korea — calling any unilateral first strike a "gamble" with millions of lives.

"Let's be smarter," the former GOP senator from Nebraska, who served as President Barack Obama's Pentagon chief from 2013 to 2015, told Defense News.

"If you want to bet that if you are going to attack North Korea, however you going to do that, and think that Kim Jong Un and the North Koreans are not going to retaliate — it's a pretty big gamble. I wouldn't want to take that gamble."

A bloody nose strike is one in which the United States would strike against Kim Jong Un's regime to send a message without triggering a full-scale war — and its critics include Victor Cha, who had been expected to be named ambassador to South Korea but fell out of favor in part because of his objections to the strategy, which he outlined in a commentary for the Washington Post.

Hagel told Defense News that President Donald Trump has made the situation with North Korea "worse, with his tweets."

"That says to me he doesn't understand the consequences of a nuclear exchange," he told the outlet. "There is no winner in that . . . and we must avoid it."

"There would be literally millions of people dead in South Korea, tens of thousands of Americans dead," Hagel added.

"Let's cut the rhetoric, let's cut the tension, let's cut the nonsense and bravado, and let's get busy and start following what the South Koreans are doing in finding openings with the North," he told Defense News.

"Engagement is not surrender or appeasement. Great powers engage. Great powers talk to people. Great powers take responsibility. And that's what we should be doing with North Korea."
