Any parent who sees the graphic image of a father and daughter who drowned in the Rio Grande while trying to enter the United States has to be "profoundly disturbed," Sen. Chris Coons said Wednesday.

"After the Second World War, the United States reflected on the ways in which we refused to accept refugees fleeing Nazi Germany," the Delaware Democrat told CNN's "New Day." "An entire ship full of Jewish citizens of Germany were denied the opportunity to enter the United States. They floated off the East Coast for months and months. Then ultimately were forced to return to Germany where many were killed. It's because of that incident we changed our laws to make it possible for people fleeing violence and persecution to come here and seek asylum. We should reflect on that history again today."

Coons also discussed special counsel Robert Mueller's upcoming testimony on July 17, saying he'd want to know his views on whether President Donald Trump obstructed justice or if he should be prosecuted once he leaves office, but if he didn't answer those questions, then he would want him to review his report.

"One of the challenges here is that I think Robert Mueller counted on the American people to read at least the summaries of his report," the Delaware Democrat told CNN's "New Day." "I think when you read them, it is striking. It's fairly alarming that the president and his inner circle clearly in at least a half dozen occasions engaged in obstruction of justice."

Coons added that Mueller laid out in "great detail" how Russia interfered in the 2016 election, and he is concerned about the "lack of concrete action" to be sure the 2020 race is secured.

As the hearing will be shown on television, Coons said he hopes many more people watch Mueller than have read his report.
