Gov. Chris Christie said Sunday any targets of a reported sealed indictment from special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe are already keenly aware of it, asserting “if you’re the person, you know.”

In an interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” the New Jersey Republican — a former federal prosecutor — also lashed out at the leak of the indictment - warning “depending on who disposed this to CNN, it could be a crime.”

CNN reported Friday the first charges have been filed in Mueller’s investigation, and are sealed and that those charged could be taken into custody as soon as Monday.

“First off, it’s supposed to be kept secret,” Christie said. “There are very strict criminal laws about disclosing grand jury information,” adding: “Depending on who disclosed this to CNN, it could be a crime.”

“We don't know who this person is, what the charges are,” he said. “We don't know anything except that there's a report that someone says there will be charges on Monday and there is a sealed indictment. “

But, Christie said, “the one thing that is clear here… believe me, if you're the person, you know.”

“You have already been told you're a target,” he said. “Your lawyers, they have to advise you of your status as to whether you're a target. If you're told you're a target, believe me. You're not sleeping anyway.”

He also rebuked the possibility of preemptive pardons.

“If anybody is sitting around thinking ‘I don't have to worry about anything, because the president will pardon me,’ they should talk to … others who thought they were going to be pardoned — all the people involved in Watergate — and the pardons they thought they were going to be getting from President [Richard] Nixon. They're still waiting.”
