New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said anyone who thinks it's a good idea to let Russian President Vladimir Putin take care of Islamic State (ISIS) militants is "painfully naive."

He was referencing one of his chief rivals for the GOP presidential nomination: Donald Trump.

Russia began airstrikes in Syria last week in coordination with the government of President Bashar Assad. Russia claims to be targeting ISIS, but the U.S. government says all the targets have been against Free Syrian Army positions – allies of the United States in the country's three-way conflict.

"Just when you think it can't get worse it does. And just when you think this foreign policy can't cost more to the American people it does," Christie said Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

"We don't need to be friends with Vladimir Putin, and we don't need to be worried whether he's in quagmire," Christie said, a reference to Obama's warning to Putin he would end up in a quagmire in Syria.

"After 40 years, we allowed Russia to be back in the Middle East. And now who are they partnered with? Iran," Christie said.

Trump has indicated he would rather allow Putin to take care of ISIS and leave America out of it. But Christie said it is the United States who should be taking the lead in the fight.

"We know Putin is not fighting ISIS. Putin is there to prop up Assad," Christie said. "There's now 300,000 dead in Syria, because of Assad. And Now Putin is going in, teaming with the Iranians, to prop up Assad. Only Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton could mess up this foreign policy that badly."
