Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, on Tuesday demanded that President Joe Biden fire Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas as one of his requirements for supporting a continuing resolution, reports the Washington Examiner.
Roy, in a letter to colleagues, outlined his demands in order to gain his support for legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security or a continuing resolution, one of which must be passed before the September 30 deadline to avoid a government shutdown.
Among Roy's demands are measures to increase security at the southern border, including signing the House border security bill H.R. 2, and a $10 billion reimbursement to the state of Texas for border security expenses.
"Enacting a CR would unacceptably mean continuing the funding level and policies of the disastrous FY 2023 omnibus, which [California Republican House Speaker Kevin] McCarthy correctly argued perpetuates the border crisis," Roy wrote. "Passing a full-year DHS appropriations bill without forcing the significant change necessary to secure the southern border is equally objectionable, even with some policy riders."
The Texas congressman also demanded that Biden ensure Mayorkas "is removed from office, resigns, or is fired."
Roy wrote: "Simply put, no member of Congress should agree to fund a federal agency at war with his state and people. We have a moral obligation to protect our states, our nation, and, importantly, the migrant children getting abused from the disaster transpiring at our southern border. No border security, no funding."
