The Department of Justice will ask Canada to extradite a Chinese woman who is accused of breaking U.S.-placed sanctions on Iran via her executive position at a Chinese telecommunications firm.
The New York Times reported Tuesday night that the U.S. is expected to submit a formal request to Canadian authorities regarding Meng Wanzhou, the current chief financial officer of Huawei. The deadline to do so is Jan. 30.
Wanzhou was arrested Dec. 1 at an airport in Vancouver. She has been ordered to stay in the city as her case plays out. The DOJ has accused her of telling lies to U.S. banks regarding Huawei ignoring Iran sanctions to conduct business.
"We will continue to pursue the extradition of defendant Ms. Meng Wanzhou, and will meet all deadlines set by the U.S.-Canada Extradition Treaty," DOJ spokesman Marc Raimondi told the Times. "We greatly appreciate Canada's continuing support in our mutual efforts to enforce the rule of law."
