Chicago, which has regularly been singled out by President Donald Trump for its violent crime problem, has seen a drop in crime for the 15th consecutive month, and the Chicago Police Department has recovered over 3,400 illegal guns so far in 2018, ABC 7 reports.

The city has had 229 fewer shootings and 52 fewer murders through the end of May compared to the same time frame in 2017, and Chicago has had 500 fewer shooting victims than the same period in 2016.

"The truth of the matter is, if you feel comfortable, you're going to be outside," Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said according to CNN. "If you're not comfortable, you're going pull the kids in off the porch inside. It's not a statistic. It's a feeling towards that."

"We're making progress," Emanuel added. "We're not where we need to be but (what) we do have is a strategy that generally people buy into."

The declines, which include a 16 percent drop in murders from 2016, a 14 percent drop in homicides and robberies and a 13 percent drop in auto thefts, can be attributed to the police department's "data driven" crime strategy per Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson.

The city has invested in gunshot detection systems and predictive crime software, and the community "has reengaged with the police department and are helping us to reduce the violence," Johnson told CNN last month.

Trump last year said he was sending federal help to fight Chicago crime that had reached "epidemic" proportions.

The number of murders in Chicago exceeded 760 in 2016, a jump of nearly 60 percent, and was more than Los Angeles and New York combined.
