Critics of the United Nations can find heartening news in the batch of Hillary Clinton emails released on August 31: Chelsea Clinton is not singing the U.N.'s praises either.
Paul Bonicelli at
The Federalist writes on
an email sent by Chelsea to her parents after visiting Haiti to observe the organization's earthquake relief efforts there five years ago.
She was not impressed.
"The incompetence is mind-numbing," Chelsea Clinton told her parents. Her mother was secretary of state and her father, Bill, was the U.N. special envoy to Haiti at the time.
The former first daughter goes on to say the Haitians are unhappy with the U.N.'s efforts and would rather have their own people uniformed and patrolling at night – or the U.S. military.
That underscores what the Clintons and the Democratic party should understand, Bonicelli says: The United States, or any other Western nation, should be leading relief efforts that the United Nations currently handles.
"[C]ountries in need of help do not want the U.N. with its bumbling and corruption in charge of stabilization and development efforts," he writes. "They want real leadership, and they want the United States to do it."
The fact that Chelsea Clinton, who "was reared by two of the U.N.’s biggest fans," is disgusted should give conservatives ammunition when international organizations are touted in the future, he writes.
"As someone who oversaw U.S. foreign assistance for Haiti in the George W. Bush administration and has traveled there many times to do what Clinton was doing — reviewing the work of development programs where U.S. tax dollars are at stake — I must say I’m impressed with Clinton’s lengthy commentary," Bonicelli writes. "It is incisive, blunt, and filled with facts."
Now that someone with "unimpeachable credentials on the internationalist Left" is in agreement, he said, "we should bring this memo out of the drawer and wave it about, reminding people that no less than the Clinton name is attached to doubt about the U.N."
