Local lawmakers in Charlotte, N.C., the city hosting the 2020 Republican National Convention, voted to condemn President Donald Trump's remarks aimed at four congresswomen, The Charlotte Observer is reporting.
The city council voted to 9-2 on Monday to approve the resolution, citing Trump’s “racist and xenophobic” tweets and comments. All Democratic members voted in favor and the Republicans opposed it, according to the newspaper.
Trump's remarks were aimed at Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan.
“I oppose phrases like ‘Send Her Back’ in the strongest possible way I can relate to you ... It’s tyrannical,” said GOP council member Tariq Bokhari said. But he questioned whether the local government should be taking a stand on national issues.
“How are we to be the judge of all that? ... It feels like the word ‘racism’ is thrown around like the word ‘witch’ in the 1600s.”
