Charlie Hebdo — the French satirical magazine attacked by Islamist gunmen for a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad in 2015 — published another provocative front-page drawing tweaking Islam on Wednesday.

The latest edition shows two people in a pool of blood after having been mowed down by a van next to the words "Islam, eternal religion of peace," Newsweek reported.

It is a reference to last week's attacks in Spain where 15 people were killed and more than 100 injured after a van and car plowed through crowds of pedestrians. Authorities suspect it was carried out by terrorists groomed by an extremist Islamic preacher.

But Charlie Hebdo editor Laurent Sourisseau said in an editorial: "The debates and questions about the role of religion, and in particular the role of Islam, in these attacks have completely disappeared."

But French Socialist MP Stephane Le Foll said the cartoon was "extremely dangerous," adding "when you're a journalist you need to exercise restraint because making these associations can be used by other people."

In January 2015, two gunmen linked to al-Qaida shot dead 12 people in the Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris.
