Billionaire political donor Charles Koch has doled out $10 million in grants to think tanks to push a restrained foreign policy, Politico is reporting.

It is part of an effort by Koch to change the conversation on U.S. foreign policy, the website noted.

The grants are divided among four institutions: the Atlantic Council, the Center for the National Interest, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and the RAND Corporation.

The money will pay for scholarly positions and activities that look at different aspects of foreign policy, Politico reported. The focus will be on testing widely held assumptions about using military force.

"There are a lot of important ideas that either need to be leveraged in our policy analysis or discovered or rediscovered," said Will Ruger, vice president for research and policy at the Charles Koch Institute, which administers the grants.

The Atlantic Council will receive about $4.5 million, which will be used to support scholars and activities related to how the U.S. balances its use of diplomacy, the military, and international alliances, according to Politico.

The other institutions will use their grants in different ways, including looking at how strategies are impacted by technological changes and fostering discussions about the role of the U.S. internationally and how the notion of restraint fits in.

Meanwhile, the Senate on Thursday approved a bipartisan measure limiting President Donald Trump's authority to launch military operations against Iran.

Eight Republicans joined with Democrats to approve the resolution by a vote of 55-45.
