Catholic League President: IRS Will Never Silence Us

The IRS, Justice Department, and Benghazi scandals rocking Washington have created a "perfect storm'' that will ultimately end in a massive political shake-up.

That's the sobering opinion of Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, who said in a column for Newsmax that his group was one of the many conservative outlets targeted by the Internal Revenue Service.

Story continues below video.

Donohue said he is not sure how the IRS scandal will shake out, but it will definitely result in some major personnel changes.

"I don't know that you'll ever have a clean IRS, but there's going to be some heads going to roll beyond what we have seen, and that's because this is too deep,'' Donohue said, referring to his bombshell column on Newsmax TV's "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Thursday.

"If you put this together with Benghazi and the AP scandal, what you have here is a culture of arrogance,'' he said. "You've got three of them all coming together at the same time. This is the perfect storm.''

But Donohue, who says he was targeted for speaking out against abortion and on other issues, insisted that he will never be silenced.

"The IRS is not going to shut me up and I hope they're listening. I will never be shut up by the IRS for exercising my First Amendment right to freedom of speech,'' Donohue said.

"This is the hard left. They're hardwired into a lot of the major command centers in this country and … they try to bring the IRS in on top of you," said Donohue. "The whole game here is intimidation. It has a chilling effect on the First Amendment.''

In the Newsmax column, Donohue claimed that within weeks after Barack Obama was elected president in 2008, the Catholic League was notified that it was under investigation for violating the federal code regarding the political activities of tax-exempt nonprofits.

Donohue accused a George Soros-funded, left-leaning Catholic organization called Catholics United of blowing the whistle on him.

Donohue told Steve Malzberg he believes the IRS wanted him to admit that he did violate its code, although not intentionally.

"As I said, I didn’t violate anything … because as far as I’m concerned, abortion is a civil rights issue. The organization is called The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights. Abortion is a civil rights issue,'' he said.

Donohue accused President Barack Obama of supporting "selective infanticide," with his liberal views on abortion and said he had an obligation to oppose that.

"If I don’t come out and make the case against somebody who's in favor of selective infanticide, then I shouldn’t be the president of The Catholic League,'' he said.
