Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz gave his offensive linemen guns as gifts for Christmas, adding new meaning to the shotgun formation.

Wentz, an avid hunter, purchased the Baretta shotguns that retail for about $2,000 each for his linemen, ESPN reported. The rookie quarterback even personalized the weapons, engraving each player's number on the butt of his weapon.

"This is an awesome gun," said lineman Allen Barbre, who is also a hunter, ESPN reported. "I'm excited about it. I don't know if I'll shoot it, though. It's pretty nice."

Wentz played college football at North Dakota State University before joining the Eagles and is a hunting buddy of Los Angeles Angels outfielder and south New Jersey native Mike Trout, according to ESPN.

"Carson Wentz grew up in North Dakota, and if his Christmas gifts to his offensive linemen are any indication, he hasn't left the woods and his hunting days behind him," wrote Ryan Phillips, of the USA Today Sports blog "The Big Lead."

"Wentz hasn't actually delivered the guns yet as they are still being finished, but he sent a text message to his linemen with pictures of gifts attached," he added.

While some of Wentz's teammates, like Barbre, appear to be comfortable with the gun, rookie Isaac Seumalo said he may need some instruction, ESPN reported.

"I haven't really held a gun or anything before," Seumalo said, per ESPN. "But I'm more than thankful for it. It looks sweet. Carson said he'd teach me how to use it and all that good stuff."

The gun violence prevention group CeaseFirePA issued a statement Wednesday night that it would send gun locks to the Eagles offensive linemen to go with Wentz's guns.

"Our staff’s immediate reaction to the news about Wentz’s gifts to his teammates was to ensure that the gifts were used safely and responsibly," CeaseFirePA executive director Shira Goodman said in the statement. "We've been working with Sheriff Jewell Williams, city council president Darrell Clarke, and Temple University Hospital on a gun lock program all year. For us, the only logical answer was 'Got a Gun? Get a Lock!'"
