Caroline Kennedy Eyed for Canada Ambassador Post

By    |   Thursday, 07 February 2013 12:13 PM EST

The spirit of Camelot may be headed north with Caroline Kennedy in the running for the new U.S. Ambassador to Canada.

Canadian news reports say Kennedy, the daughter of John F. Kennedy, is one of the top names being considered by President Barack Obama as a replacement for outgoing ambassador David Jacobson, a Chicago lawyer.

Obama “puts a pretty good face on things for Canadians. But I think Caroline Kennedy would really add to that and give us a chance to deepen the relationship and connect well," Chris Sands, a Canada-U.S. relations expert at The Hudson Institute, told Canada’s National Post.

The newspaper says others being eyed include former Washington State Gov. Christine Gregoire; former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm; former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer; former Maine Sen. Olympia Snow; and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing.

Adding to the intrigue surrounding Kennedy are rumors she is also being looked at for the post of U.S. Ambassador to Ireland, a position her aunt, Jean Kennedy Smith, held from 1993 to 1998.

A 55-year-old lawyer, author and mother of three, Kennedy has limited political experience despite her storied family name. She ran for U.S. senator in New York when Hillary Clinton’s seat became available in 2009, but later pulled out.

Kennedy is the only surviving child of President Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963. She stands in high regard with the Obama administration, having endorsed the president in 2008.

Her brother, John F. Kennedy Jr., was once seen as a potential political powerhouse who could carry on the Kennedy name in Washington. But he was killed along with his wife, Carolyn Bessette, and her older sister, Lauren, when the Piper Saratoga II HP plane he was piloting crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off Martha’s Vineyard in 1999.

Macleans magazine says whoever is chosen to take over from Jacobson will have high-profile policy items on their agenda, including the controversial Keystone XL pipeline venture.
