3 Die of Cancer After Organ Donor Passes Disease on

Three people died of breast cancer after an organ donor passed the disease on to them after they received transplants, the Daily Mail is reporting.

Researchers are calling it an "extraordinary" case.

The donor was a 53-year-old woman, who died of a stroke in 2007, according to the newspaper. She had donated her liver, kidneys, lungs and heart to those needing transplants.

Four of the recipients later developed breast cancer. One person survived.

The person receiving the heart died of sepsis.

The donor’s cancer had gone undetected by doctors during the transplants, the Mail said. The case was noted by the American Journal of Transplantation.

"We report 4 cases of breast cancer transmission to transplant recipients from a single organ donor that occurred years after donation," the Journal said. "The diagnosis of breast cancer was occult at the time of donation."

A woman who received both lungs from the donor was the first diagnosed with cancer, the newspaper said. Medical experts were able to prove the cancer had originated with the organ donor by doing DNA testing.

In 2011, a man who received his right kidney from the donor and a woman who received the left kidney from the same person, were both were diagnosed with cancer.

The man had his kidney removed and underwent chemotherapy. He has been cancer free since 2012. The woman died two months after she was diagnosed. A woman who received the liver from the donor died in 2014.
