Anthony Ferrante, a former top FBI and White House cybersecurity official who led the U.S. effort to combat Russian hacking in the 2016 presidential election, has been hired by BuzzFeed to verify certain claims in the Trump dossier, Foreign Policy reports.

BuzzFeed, the first media outlet to publish the dossier, is being sued by President Donald Trump's personal lawyer for defamation over the publication.

Ferrante, who now works at FTI consulting in Washington, D.C., joined the FBI in 2005 and the National Security Council as a cybersecurity expert in 2015. The dossier, compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele, contained explosive allegations the Russian government had been "cultivating, supporting, and assisting" Trump for years.

The research on Trump was initially funded by the conservative outlet The Washington Free Beacon, but that agreement ended when Trump won the Republican Party nomination. Funding to continue the probe was taken over by the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton's campaign, and Steele shared some of his findings with the FBI after he reportedly found a series of contacts between Trump associates and Russians during the campaign centered around the DNC hacking.

The results of the FTI investigation could be a big deal for FBI special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, because it "would establish outside veracity of dossier allegations," a source told Foreign Policy.

Mueller is investigating whether there was any coordination between Russian officials and members of Trump's campaign team as part of the Russian interference in the election.
