South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg said rival Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren is “extremely evasive” on what Medicare for All would cost middle class taxpayers.

Warren, D-Mass., didn’t directly answer the question posed by The Late Show host Stephen Colbert on Tuesday, “Are you going to raise the middle class taxes?”

"Senator Warren is known for being straightforward and was extremely evasive when asked that question, and we've seen that repeatedly," Buttigieg said Thursday during an interview on CNN.

"I think that if you are proud of your plan and it's the right plan, you should defend it in straightforward terms," he said. "And I think it's puzzling that when everybody knows the answer to that question of whether her plan and Senator [Bernie] Sanders's [I-Vt.] plan will raise middle class taxes is 'yes.' Why you wouldn't just say so, and then explain why you think that's the better way forward?"

Healthcare has become a top issue in the 2020 Democratic primary debates so far, with candidates clashing over Medicare for All.

Warren supports a plan authored by Sanders that would replace private health insurance with a single plan run by the government. She’s argued overall costs would decrease for those in the middle class because Medicare for All would eliminate the premiums, deductibles and co-pays many people currently pay for their insurance plans.

Buttigieg’s own plan would automatically enroll those without insurance. People who have insurance through their employer could keep their plans or join the new government plan.
