Michelle Obama will cancel two stops on her book tour to attend the funeral of former President George H.W. Bush, the former first lady wrote in a tweet on Sunday.
“It’s important to me to join the Bush family in celebrating President George H.W. Bush’s exemplary life,” she wrote. “This will unfortunately preclude my visits to Paris and Berlin. I’ve been deeply touched by the enthusiasm for my memoir, and I’m working to reschedule my trip for next year.”
She continued in another tweet: “I hope readers and ticket holders will understand my decision regarding my desire to attend President Bush’s funeral, and join me in paying tribute to him and his tremendous contributions to our world.”
Bush, who died on Friday, will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol and be buried at his family plot in Texas, The Hill reported.
Michelle Obama, who is in the middle of a multi-city tour for her memoir, “Becoming,” had also on Friday issued a joint statement with her husband, former President Barack Obama, paying tribute to Bush, calling him "a patriot and humble servant."
The statement added that “Bush's life is a testament to the notion that public service is a noble, joyous calling…” and that he has "a legacy of service that may never be matched, even though he’d want all of us to try."
