Early polls suggest voters in Britain appear to have chosen to remain in the European Union, but the margin is razor-thin in the crucial referendum, and officials vote totals aren't expected until Friday.

But as vote-counting continued into the night, a strong "Leave" vote began to take shape, Fox News Channel reported.

In a tweet Thursday afternoon, the AP reports "Conservative lawmakers urge UK's prime minister to stay; British pound surges on news of 'remain' vote."
Meanwhile, Reuters reported a YouGov poll for Sky News taken minutes after polls closed found 52 percent voted to remain in the 28-nation bloc, and 48 percent chose to leave.

"It looks like 'remain' will edge it," Independence Party Leader Nigel Farage tells Sky News, Reuters reports.

The referendum vote on whether to remain in the EU stay in the European Union has split the nation – and had financial markets and politicians around the world on edge.

Though opinion polls taken before the vote indicated the outcome would be too close to forecast, two polls published late Wednesday suggested, however, a swing towards "Remain."
